A jealous fight between the king and queen of the fairies, Titania and Oberon, unleashes the forces of nature. In a rage, Oberon sends his sprite Puck off with a love potion to make the fairy queen amenable to him again. There’s also plenty of confusion in the earthly world of emotions. Among four young, hot-blooded lovers, only one happy couple have found each other. Although the other two are in love as well, it’s not with each other, but with the others. The four of them escape the strict order of their world and find refuge in the forest. Under Puck’s love spell, they all become puppets – including Titiana and a group of amateur actors rehearsing a tragedy of great emotions among the trees. The idiot becomes a donkey and, while intoxicated with the love potion, the fairy queen discovers her attraction to hooved animals. Through this outrageous union, Titiana is ultimately disciplined and Oberon gets his way. To re-establish order, Puck uses the love serum one more time and transforms the hot-headed lovers into two happy couples.       

aufBruch will stage Shakespeare’s play surrounded by wild nature, in an abandoned open-air stage in Jungfernheide park.

Combined with texts by French dramatist Bernard-Marie Koltès, the comedy is expanded to become a play about the twilight places in which the hidden business with drugs flourishes, where dependencies collide, people try to escape constraints and lawlessness and the rights to territory fight it out right in the middle of society.

In this way, Shakespeare becomes a contemporary author with plenty of connections to the prison theatre’s material and performers.
